History of Tulsipur

Tulsipur has a rich history that dates back centuries. The region was originally inhabited by the indigenous Tharu people, who developed sophisticated agricultural practices adapted to the local environment.

During the 18th century, the area came under the rule of the Sen dynasty, and later became part of the unified Kingdom of Nepal under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. The name "Tulsipur" is believed to have originated from the abundance of Tulsi (holy basil) plants in the region.

In the mid-20th century, the Rapti Valley Development Project brought significant changes to the region, including malaria eradication and infrastructure development, which led to increased migration from hill regions to Tulsipur.

In recent decades, Tulsipur has grown rapidly, transitioning from a rural agricultural center to a bustling sub-metropolitan city with expanding commercial, educational, and administrative facilities.

Culture & Heritage

Tulsipur's cultural landscape is shaped by its diverse ethnic communities, each contributing unique traditions, festivals, and artistic expressions to the city's vibrant heritage.

The indigenous Tharu community's rich cultural traditions are particularly prominent, with their distinctive architecture, colorful festivals like Maghi, and traditional dance forms such as the Sakhya Nach.

Throughout the year, Tulsipur comes alive with celebrations of major festivals including Dashain, Tihar, Holi, and Chhath, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of different religious and cultural practices.
